She's made $5 Million from Amazon and Used to Live In a Trailer Park

I'm so lucky that I got to interview Morgan, a self-made millionaire who has sold over 5 million dollars on Amazon! Morgan, A.K.A. Lil’ Mo or @cajunventures on social media, is also a content creator with thousands of followers. She has even recently developed an info product and is now teaching others to make money online just like she does. Morgan came to Austin all the way from New Orleans Louisiana to visit and I couldn't be more excited!

Follow along with this interview-style post as I ask Morgan about how she started, her steps along the way, and what her plans are for the future as she continues to grow online!

Q: How did you get started making money online?

A: “I was so sick and tired of my job. I knew there had to be a more fulfilling way to earn my money. We — my husband Brook and I — began by selling products on Amazon. I used to be a couponer and it became very apparent that we had a lot of stuff sitting around that we weren't utilizing. I started scanning a few books I had around the house to see if they would be worth anything. Then, I scanned some discontinued items that we never used. After listing and selling our first item, it was clear that there was a big market on Amazon for reselling items. We became hooked and started to make a decent amount of money. It wasn't so much of a job as it was a game; we were constantly figuring out how we could make more money by working smarter not harder.”

Q: What gave you the confidence to go full time?

A: “It was a terrifying decision! It was terrifying to not have a 401k or health benefits! But at the end of the day, we were trapping ourselves in jobs that we hated! I used to be a waitress and my partner Brook used to be a sugar cane farmer. We were busting butt for $400 a week because that’s all we ever knew.

I did everything I was told to do in the right order. I went to school, I got a job, and I still wasn't happy! I was miserable! We got to the point where we weren't even concerned about how much money we were making. We were more concerned about living a life that fulfilled us. I asked myself if I would rather dread working 40 hours a week or work this whole make-money-online thing out. As an entrepreneur, I took a leap of faith and went for the latter. At least if it didn't work out, I knew that I tried.”

Q: How did you make the transition?

A: “It took about 6 months before we were able to make the switch from side hustle to full time. We knew we were safe to make the change when we would roll over first thing in the morning, check our Amazon sales, and see that we had already made more money on Amazon that morning than we would by spending a full day at our 9 to 5 jobs. It was so scary! I didn't actually end up leaving my job until a year after we started and Brook didn't leave his until about 2 years after. We wanted to be able to put all of our energy into making money online, not just the time we had over our lunch breaks. It was the best decision ever.”

Q: How long have you been full-time?

A: “We started about 5 years ago, so that makes 4 years full-time for me.”

Q: What happened when you went full-time?

A: “Again, it was terrifying! When you work for yourself, your success or failure is 100% your fault. You can't blame a crappy boss or coworker. It's all on you! We were constantly Google and YouTube searching how to do things because we had never done anything like this before! I slowly let go of distractions and surrounded myself with people that knew way more than I did. We were open to learning and adapting. I think that's one thing that really helped us grow so quickly.”

Q: What’s your main source of income?

A: “Our main source of income is still Amazon. More recently, in the past 7 or 8 months, we started teaching people how to sell on Amazon. With the pandemic, we became really interested in selling digital products, and as you mention, even launched our own info product. We also started dabbling in real estate investing!”

Q: What advice do you have for beginners?

A: “Don't let the technical part of building a business online scare you! I can barely save a file! Anything coding or programming-related is beyond me! Luckily, we have Google and Youtube, where there is a step-by-step guide for literally anything out there. Once you get the basic concepts put in place, you can build and hire out a team to do anything you can.

We went from zero followers to 450,000 in one year on all platforms combined. We didn't know what we were doing! We were simply posting content and hoping that it helped someone! I think as long as you focus on who you want to help, the product you want to deliver, and consistently uploading content, the rest will work out.”

Q: How do you know what to sell on Amazon?

A: “That's our number one question that we get asked! There are thousands of products out there so how do we know which ones to sell? In short, we look at the data. You can’t sell something just because you like it. You have to let the data sell the product. There is software out there that will tell you exactly how many units of a certain product sell on Amazon. We look for products with low competition, high demand, and high-profit margins. I don't care what the product is… if you are buying something on Amazon, I want you to be buying it from me!”

Q: Can you share a mistake you made when you first started out?

A: “When we first started selling, we were amazed by the concept of buying something for $10 and selling it for $30. We had thousands of products and only the 2 of us running the business. Even today at 5 million, we run everything out of our garage!

One mistake we made was choosing products that didn't have a large enough profit margin. It takes the same amount of work to sell a $5 item as it does a $50 item. Sell the more expensive product!

Another mistake we made was selecting fragile items. Don't do it! The postal service is going to break your products and you’re going to have to deal with inventory issues, customer service complaints, etc.

In the end, you don't know what you don't know. Until you actually start your business, you aren't going to know everything and that's okay!”

Q: How do you handle failure?

A: “Everybody is scared to fail! It's a universal thing! That being said, I’ve gotten to a point where I love failing! Every time I fail, I learn something. If you always do things the same way and never adapt, you will never learn! As the saying goes, action takers are the money makers.

One thing to stay away from is analysis paralysis. Brook knew somebody who researched for years and years on how to sell on Amazon but never sold one thing. Meanwhile, we have no idea what we are doing and we've made millions! You have to take the risk. If you don't try, you have a 100% chance of failure.”

Q: Where do you hope to be in 5 years?

A: “I hope that 5 years from now all of our current processes are automated. There are still a lot of things that we are figuring out for ourselves because are still new to it! 8 months ago, we didn't have an email list and didn't know what a sales funnel was. Everything we are doing is performing successfully but I know there are ways to take it to the next level. My goal is to get the right people and processes to actually be able to travel and work wherever you want.

At the end of the day, I just want to help people! We have lived paycheck to paycheck; we have had to put food back on the shelf because we couldn't afford it. The money we make is great but when we hear stories about how our course changed people's lives for the better, it really hits home. There is more than enough room on the world wide web for us all to make money online so it's really important to us that we share what we learned. That's my biggest motivation!”

Q: Do you have any parting words?

A: “Have a positive mindset, do things that are outside of your comfort zone, and go make that money!”
