VAN LIFE SAFETY TIPS

When Ashley and I tell people we live in a van, we are always asked if we feel safe.  Aren’t you scared of someone breaking in?  Aren’t you nervous about getting robbed?  In short, no.  As long as I have my samurai sword with me, we will be fine. 

Step 1: Parking

We always park the van somewhere safe.  Most of the time, we park at a campground that we pay for.  When not at a campground, we park on BLM land that is used for dispersed camping.  We keep our distance from others and they keep their distance from us.  We have yet to park in a random parking lot or generic city street.  

Step 2: Windows

Once we find a secure place to park, we block all of the windows.  This ensures that no one can see into the van.  We also do this in the city when we are grabbing a bite to eat or running errands.  Blocking the windows stops people from realizing that our van is a custom home, not just a cargo vehicle.  

Step 3: Security Cameras

Depending on the area we are in, we will put up security cameras.  We bought a system off of Amazon that runs on WiFi.  It connects to a hotspot and reports movements and sounds directly to our phones.  We honestly haven't felt the need to use the security system that often. 

Step 4: Lock The Van

It’s simple and obvious, but important!  

Step 5: Cool Weapons

If all else fails, I have a collection of cool weapons that we could use to protect ourselves!

First up is the samurai sword.  It is 100% real and fulfills my dream of becoming a ninja.  Ashley argues that it’s non-essential but I disagree!

The second item is bear spray.  When camping in the middle of nowhere, having bear spray on hand makes us feel a little safer!  

Third is a slingshot.  This way, we can target potential intruders from far away.  My slingshot is equipped with an arm guard and steel balls.  

Fourth on the list is throwing knives.  Again, Ashley thinks they are a toy but I think they are a necessity.  

Neither Ashley nor I have ever felt unsafe while sleeping in the van.  We believe we have taken good precautionary measures and are constantly aware of our surroundings.  Just as one would protect a home, we protect our van.  It’s been a great adventure and we can’t wait to see where van life takes us next.
