Day 8: How to Be a Full Time Influencer in 2021
Free 30 Day Course
Is it possible for just anyone to build an online following? Or more importantly make a full time living from doing so? In short, yes!
In this lesson we will go over what being a full time influencer really means. Believe it or not, most influencers that you see online with millions of followers are actually broke! Sure, having a lot of followers means you get free stuff — free backpacks, free hair gel, free leather jackets — but tangible items can’t pay the bills!
Creating content online takes up the majority of an influencers time. For instance, in 2020 I started with around 50,000 followers on TikTok. By the end of 2020, I had 550,000! Now you may be thinking that that's amazing, and it is! However, followers do not translate to income. To make money as an influencer, you have to have a business strategy. You need to understand how to turn a follower into a viewer, a viewer into a roaring fan, and a roaring fan into a customer.
This process takes time. I'm ashamed to say it, but I spent an hour and a half on TikTok every single day in 2020. Was it worth it? Yes, yes it was because I know the backend model regarding how to convert those new 500,000 followers that I worked my but off for.
1,000 True Followers
At the end of the day, you really only need 1,000 followers on social media to make a full time living. This idea comes from a famous article called 1,000 True Fans which is the best article online about the power of influencing.
If you have 1,000 people who are willing to spend money on something you can offer, you will be golden. Say your offer is worth $50 and 1,000 people buy your offer. That’s $50,000 a year!
The Perks of Influencing
The most amazing part of being an influencer is that you can share your message with people all around the world like never before. To this day, I bet somewhere someone is watching a 21 year old Adrian teach them a dance move. Unless I take those videos down, they will continue to teach forever! Social media has given influencers the power to scale their expertise and lessons of inspiration to the moon. Someday, I will die but my content will live on forever. That’s pretty amazing.
Being an Intelligent Influencer
Before you get started, you need to figure out an offer of value you can deliver to your customer in order to collect emails.
Second, you should pick the platform that you believe you can scale on best. You have to be unromantic about your choice. Don't pick the one that's your favorite, pick the one that will be best for your brand. Choosing a platform with a generous algorithm (right now this is TikTok) is your best bet.
Next, if you're serious about being an influencer, you have to commit to actually creating content. For example, this year I’m focusing on creating content for YouTube. As you know, my goal is to put out content everyday. Last year, my main focus was TikTok where I was posting 3 videos a day! Don’t half ass it!
In order for your content to resonate with viewers, you need to find what makes you relatable. This will establish trust between you and your followers. Maybe you're a mom, an athlete, a fitness coach — whatever it is, find it! From here, you think about how you're going to tie in your opt-in offer with your persona. This way, the link in your bio is cohesive with the rest of your page.
Finally, now you can start making money! To do this, you'll either want to create your own product like an ebook, or promote other people’s products via affiliate marketing. Once you have your funnel set up, run it all day long!
Most influencers only do step one. They have their platform and are posting content. That's it. They never figured out the business end of being an influencer! To begin, ask yourself these questions…
So if you're okay with the fact that it's your face on the internet and that people are probably going to make some not so nice comments, it's time to get started!
- What type of content do you want to be known for?
- What type of content do you want to create?
- What platform do you want to be on?
- What will your offer be?
Sounds quite simple, right?
The Biggest Risk of Influencing
The biggest risk to influencing, especially if you're married to a platform, is that the said platform could go under. It could completely go away! Long story short, you may remember what happened with the platform Vine. It was a video app that was very similar to TikTok. It completely vanished and all the influencers on it who hadn't figured out the backend business of influencing went away right along with Vine.
So, it's okay to go all out on a platform, but keep in mind that a platform can change.
