DAY 4: Passive Income Mindset For Side Hustles
Free 30 Day Course
Throughout this course you're going to learn the tactics and strategies to make money online. But before you can execute your game plan, you need to determine a clear and calculated mindset. More importantly, you need to create the behavior that will help you succeed.
It’s called a “side” hustle for a reason, right? You're probably either working a 9 to 5 job currently or are in school studying in order to get one with the aspiration of making some extra money on the side.
My first goal from working on the internet was to make $75,000 a year and be a stay at home dad. It’s funny how things have changed since then. What hasn't changed, however, is my drive of wanting to create an awesome life for myself and my family.
We are all going to get distracted; it is inevitable. In fact, it's easy to get distracted before you even begin. With thousands of “how to make money online” tutorials floating around on the internet, it's hard to even know where to begin.
So, what should you do? How should you focus?
Your Golden Hour
When I started my first side hustle, I was working a full time job at a call center. I didn't have much time to work on my side hustle outside of the regular 9 to 5 hours. So, instead of giving up, I set aside one hour each morning before going into the call center and deemed it my “golden hour”.
My golden hour — usually 6:30 to 7:30 — was a chunk of undistributed, focused time that I dedicated to my side hustle each and every day. I used this time to learn something new, try out new strategies, and most importantly, I used it to fail.
An hour of time may seem like a lot to fit into your schedule if you're already stretched thin. If this is the case for you, turn your golden hour into a golden 20 or 30 minutes a day. At the end of the day, a side hustle takes time to build and doesn't just grow overnight. The more you can put into it, the more you will get out!
Your Reason “Why”
Why are you reading this post? Why are you thinking out creating a side hustle? Why are you risking failure? What fuels you?
That’s your reason why.
Maybe you were bullied in high school. Maybe you have failed before and that burdens you. Maybe you don't have a support system that understands your dreams. These are all great points of motivation, but this, what I like to call “hater fuel” can’t fuel a rocket ship. The hater fuel will get you outside the ozone but not to the moon. To get to the moon, you need a real reason why.
That being said, I encourage you to dream big. Your “why” is going to be what gets you through the failures and in turn will be there for your success.
Feel free to write your “why” down, comment it on one of my Instagram posts, shout it from the rooftops — whatever you feel driven to do.
Did you do it? Ok, good.
Like I mentioned, the next 30 days are going to be intense. You're going to be challenged and you're going to get frustrated. Any of the times that you go into failure, I need you to look back at your reason why. It will help fuel you up and set your sights clear after you fall.
Ignoring Instant Gratification
The next biggest mindset to adopt is really less of adding something, and more of removing the feelings that you're going to get. Unfortunately, because of the internet, it is extremely oridarry to see others flashing their (perceived) wealth via social media. We often get a sense of immediate gratification for anything that we touch, launch, try, and test.
In other words, you're so used to seeing other’s overnight successes online that when you launch your online business and it doesn't scale on the first try, you're going to feel inclined to give up. You're going to want to come up with excuses as to why it just won't work.
This environment is one that we can’t avoid. Every time we pick up our phones, we are subject to instant gratification.
You're going to fail a lot. In fact, here’s a true, honest fact regarding my 2019 and 2020 campaigns:
My success rate for all the campaigns that I launch (which is thousands), is just 20%. That's it!
I failed four times more than I succeeded. I’m not romantic with the idea that just because I’ve come this far, everything I launch is going to be successful. I still have the relentless mindset that I started with because I know that every time I fail, I am one step closer to creating an amazing campaign that will help me achieve my income goals.
To recap... there are tons of, what I call, “internet lotteries” out there when it comes to making a buck online. I want to remind you once again to stay mentally tough, be resilient, and to lose your pride about failing. In the internet world failing is really just a test.
Protecting Your Space
I know you're probably really excited about your side hustle and feel inclined to tell everybody about your amazing idea. However, you need to understand that creating a side hustle and making money online is not normal.
Most people live a pretty “normal” life: they go to college, get a job, get married, and work up the corporate ladder. You wanting to start an online business to improve your life is not normal to them. The response that many will have to your online business is that it's too risky. It will stir up fear and doubt inside them.
They will come up with reasons of why its stupid or won’t work, how its impossible or saturated, and how it sounds like a scam. It’s not that your friends and family have ill intentions for you. Instead, it is usually them projecting their own insecurities. It's simply human nature to feel fear when we see someone doing something outside of the lines.
So with that said, if you have an amazing group of friends or family that are supportive and who already encourage your plans, go ahead and tell them. They will help keep you accountable which is so important!
On the other hand, if you don't have a group or person that you feel will support you, then don't share. Luckily, you have tons of other people on the internet (like me!) that are doing and going through the exact same things you are. These are the people you want to talk to. We are all aspiring to do something different and create something new online.
I want you to be prepared and I want you to be excited. I also want you to protect your space. You need all the positivity you can get right now. Only let in those who will help you create that positive atmosphere for yourself.
I hope you're ready to learn, test, fail, AND succeed! I’ll catch you in the next one.
Peace and God bless.
