Do you want to build a passive income online business but don't have any money to get started?  If so, this is the post for you.  

In the last post, we talked about how to take an e-commerce business from $0 to $10,000 in a week’s time.  You can consider this post the exact opposite.  But wait, don't go away!  I know the idea of making money slowly isn’t as attractive as making it fast.  

The biggest difference in a normal fast-scale online business is the amount of money on ads.  The ads are targeted at the right people at the right time and can skyrocket your sales.  You keep spending and spending money on ads until you've reached the prime formula.  That’s what scaling is all about.   This side hustle, however, is not about scaling fast but rather scaling slow.  This is because instead of using paid traffic, you are going to use organic traffic. 

I’m not talking about organic farm-fresh produce; I’m talking about grade A, quality, organic traffic.   Organic traffic takes manual effort but you don't have to pay for it!  If you're somebody who is ballin’ on a budget or the thought of spending money on ads sounds scary, pay attention because this is the business model for you.  This model takes time but I assure you it will one day compound into glorious passive income. 

This is exactly what happened with my first business where I taught people how to dance.  

I don't want to tell you how long it took for me to make my first dollar online because, back then, I didn't know what I was doing.  Unlike young Adrian, you're going to learn and use the correct strategy from the get-go.  It may take 6 months to 1 year to get your momentum going but I promise it won’t feel like work.  Hopefully, you’ll love the process and learn along the way.  

My Shopify Store

Let’s take a look at the Shopify store that I used to sell my dance tutorials.  Remember, I have not touched this site in years.  Despite that, it still produces an income!  Granted, it’s not as much compared to when it was in its prime but hey, income is income.  That’s the power of organic traffic; the momentum that you build in the beginning doesn't go away — even after 5 years!

My Shopify store is an example of an evergreen business.  A business is evergreen when it offers products that are demanded day in and day out.  This is very different from the idea we talked about in Day 16’s post over trends.  My business is based on a very simple search.  When someone Googles “how to dance the robot”, my website comes up.  I find it crazy that 10 years later, I am still ranked in the #1 spot for video results and on the 2nd page for website results.  

Google Keyword Planner

 

In the screenshot above, I am using Google Keyword Planner.  This is a free tool that can help you draft out keywords to maximize your SEO.  I typed in the phrases “how to dance”, “how to dance the robot”, and “how to dance salsa”.  By clicking the Get Results button, Google will show me how often each of these phrases is searched each month.  

You could call “how to dance” the umbrella category.  When someone types this in, you don't know which type of dance they want to learn.  I always say that riches are in the niches, so added “the robot” onto the end of the second phrase and “salsa” on the third.  “Robot” and “salsa” are the niches.  

What’s crazy is that “how to dance the robot” is searched only 90 times a month through Google on average!  Yet, I was still able to create a business that brought in $5,000 a month that lasted for years by teaching the robot.  The moral of the story is that something doesn't need to be searched a lot to make money!  There are millions of people asking questions and looking for answers via Google.  You can rank from organic traffic and let me tell you, it’s hard not to make money once you do.  

One of my favorite things about the Keyword Planner is that when you type phrases in, it generates related phrases that you could possibly use.  So, if you're sitting here and don't know which niche to go into, plug away!  Google will literally give you business ideas that are backed by data.  

How Do You Rank?

How should you go about ranking at the top?  Well, the short answer is by writing blogs.  On my website, I categorized them into different styles of dance.  You do not need to be an amazing writer to have a blog.  All you need is a little creativity and you'll be set.

The key to success regarding blogging is to include a product offer at the end of each post.  The reader should be hooked in and gifted value all the way throughout the post.  This way, when they get to the end, they will be more willing to purchase whatever it is that you are selling.

Unfortunately, many people think that they can make money by displaying ads in the margins of their blog.  Unless you are getting 10,000+ page views a day, this simply isn’t the case.  Instead, you should look into becoming an affiliate for brands related to your niche or creating a product of your own to sell. 

Now that you know what it takes to build a business from organic traffic, it’s time to go to work.   It’s going to take hard work, consistency, research, and creativity — and I guarantee you it’s not going to happen overnight.  In the beginning, it’s going to feel like all of your hard work and effort is not producing the return you want.  That’s just how it goes!
